Introduction:Hung Jui-Hsia (1950-) was born in Kangshan Township, Kaohsiung County, and is the chief disciple of Master Ou Hao-Nien. Her works combine traditional Chinese painting pigments with Western-style composition, seamlessly integrating the unique brushstrokes of Chinese painting with the creative themes of Western art. This fusion enhances the three-dimensional effect of her works, particularly in animal depictions, making them appear exceptionally vivid and lively. Her decades of expertise in sketching are evident in the fine details of her paintings. Hung’s artistic approach spans both Chinese and Western painting traditions, incorporating meticulous gongbi (fine-brush) techniques alongside the expressive xieyi (freehand ink) style. Her subjects encompass a wide range, including landscapes, figures, flowers and birds, wild beasts, animals, and Buddhist imagery. She has developed a unique “hazy color-layering technique,” which enriches the depth of colors and produces breathtaking results. In recent years, she has experimented with dolomite plaster on diatomaceous earth panels, discovering that this medium enhances color expression beyond traditional painting materials. She is currently the only artist in the world utilizing this eco-friendly medium. Hung teaches Chinese painting, sketching, and color painting at the National Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall’s Aesthetic Living Program.

Her works embody the spirit of “integrating East and West, merging tradition and modernity,” reflecting the influence of the Lingnan School of Painting. The Lingnan School itself was significantly shaped by Japanese painter Takeuchi Seiho, who emphasized realism and observational sketching. Takeuchi advocated for preserving the strengths of Japanese painting while incorporating Western techniques to address its limitations, a philosophy that resonated across the sea with Lingnan artists seeking to reform traditional Chinese painting.

Hung Jui-Hsia’s artwork “Beautiful Moments” exemplifies the realism of Western painting while retaining the expressive brushwork and artistic spirit of Eastern traditions. Her strong foundation in sketching is evident in the vivid portrayal of a kitten, capturing its lively energy and innocence. The composition radiates warmth and nostalgia, conveying a sense of childhood wonder and tenderness.
