Introduction:Su Feng-nan (1943–) was born in Tamsui, north of Taipei. He graduated from the National Taiwan University of Arts in 1965 and subsequently pursued graduate studies at the San Francisco Art Institute in the United States. A student of Fu Chuan-fu, he has served as head of the Department of Fine Arts and head of the Department of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy at National Taiwan University of Arts, as well as director of the Graduate Institute of Applied Arts. His works in landscape and floral subjects are the most celebrated aspects of his oeuvre. In over fifty years of refined brushwork and ink, the rugged majesty of rocks and peaks, the flowing freedom of clouds and mist, the roiling surge of waves, the myriad aspects of cascading waterfalls, and the graceful delicacy of flowers—all the splendors of the natural world—emerge naturally in terms of texture, mass, and volume. The light and color of mountains and rivers in nature, and the varied world of flowers and plants, are of course his subjects for depiction, but in his works one can also sense Su using natural scenery to express his personal artistic understanding. The elegant quality of his pictorial surfaces can be said to be a refined expression of personal spirit, and his works are held in collections by major museums at home and abroad. He has published the "Collected Paintings of Su Feng-nan" and "A Study of Landscape Painting Composition."

His works in landscape and floral subjects are the most celebrated. In over fifty years of refined brushwork and ink, the rugged majesty of rocks and peaks, the flowing freedom of clouds and mist, the roiling surge of waves, the myriad aspects of cascading waterfalls, and the graceful delicacy of flowers all emerge naturally in terms of texture, mass, and volume. In this work, he transforms what was originally a busy urban landscape surrounding the memorial hall into a picturesque mountain and lake tableau; although only a corner of the memorial hall's blue roof is visible amid the deep forest, one can still sense him using natural scenery to express his personal artistic understanding. The elegant quality of the pictorial surface can be said to be a refined expression of personal spirit.
