Introduction:Feng Bing (1953-), born in Shaanxi, now resides in Beijing. In his youth, after losing his savings to gambling, he returned to Qinghai in despair. It was while working at the Qinghai Art Gallery that he was first exposed to an environment rich in cultural and literary atmosphere, where he began learning calligraphy and painting. He serves as the Deputy Director of the Sanjiang Calligraphy and Painting Institute and a director of the Cross-Strait Cultural Exchange Society. Feng's calligraphy emphasizes strong and vigorous strokes, blending elegance with a sense of suspense, exuding vitality while retaining a delicate charm. His work balances void and reality, showcasing a free-spirited yet ancient style, with diversified characters that rise from structured to unstructured, reaching a transcendental artistic realm.
Feng’s calligraphy possesses a strong sense of modernity and excellent visual appeal, embodying the raw, desolate, rugged, and vast essence of the highlands. His compositions, akin to a game of Go, demonstrate the dynamic interplay of black and white, capturing the grandeur of nature. Additionally, Feng is renowned as the foremost Chinese painter of Tibetan Mastiffs, with a solid foundation and a free-spirited brushwork. His paintings of yaks and Tibetan Mastiffs are full of dynamism and highly enjoyable to view, marking him as a formidable artist shaped by the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
The Tibetan Mastiff, acknowledged as one of the oldest and rarest dog breeds, is steeped in Eastern legends that depict them as brave protectors. Their majestic, formidable, and loyal nature has made them the guardians of kings, nobles, and tribal chiefs. In this painting, the Tibetan Mastiff’s fierce, agile, dignified, and resilient traits are vividly portrayed. The robust brushstrokes and sweeping marks evoke the primordial, vast, and profound essence of the highlands, fully capturing the spirit of the region. The painting conveys the grand stature, proud head, bristling mane, golden limbs, piercing gaze, and deep growl of the Tibetan Mastiff, bringing to life the indomitable spirit of the highland people.
