Introduction:In 1871, John Thomson (1837–1921) was invited by James Laidlaw Maxwell (1836–1921), a medical missionary from the Presbyterian Church, for a photography tour in Taiwan, from the present area of Kaohsiung, Tainan to Pingtung. Thomson’s wet-plate photographs were well documented with location, theme, and year among other details. The photographer’s multiple publications and travel journals serve as a significant
base for researching the roots of Taiwan’s photography.
