Introduction:“Hands” are a frequent theme in Hsu Yuan-Fu’s (1932–2018) photography, ranging from their movement and gesture, their shape and skin texture to their relationship with surrounding objects. Through Hsu’s lens, hands are expressive, serving as a meaningful and timeless visual symbol. Hand plays with the effect of high contrast to emphasize the silhouette and structure in the photograph. With hardly any greyscale present , the absolute black and white, together with the body curve, trigger the association with the tai-chi motif. As the balanced state of black and white also presents a sense of flowing movement, it creates a stark and impressive visual image.
