Description:The Taiwan Literary Association was founded by Mitsuru NISHIKAWA in September 1939. Most of its members were professors from Taihoku Imperial University (today part of National Taiwan University and National Chung Hsing University), officers from the Government-General of Taiwan, some Japanese poets living in Taiwan, and a few Taiwanese authors. Nishikawa intended to make Bungei Taiwan a “pillar of Taiwanese culture.” Its contents included novels, poetry, plays, haikus, tankas, paintings, etc. Its last issue was released in January 1944, making it the longest-running literary magazine in Taiwan under the Japanese rule. Due to the Association’s reorganizations from 1939 to 1943, the style of the later issues is markedly different from that of the earlier ones. It is considered one of the two most influential belles-lettres magazines published during the Second Sino-Japanese War (the other being Taiwanese Literature). At the “Taiwan Combat Literature Meeting” held in 1943, Nishikawa proposed presenting this magazine to the Tenno [“Emperor of Japan”]. After publishing its final issue in January 1944, the magazine merged with Taiwan Bungaku (Taiwan literature), and others, and was renamed Taiwan Bungei.
