Description:In the 1950s when the anti-communist campaign was in full swing, Xia Jian, Wu Luqin, and Lin Yiliang sought to find some space for “literary freedom.” In the magazine’s inaugural statement they said: “We hope that once having finished this issue, the reader will be able to agree that this publication is worthy of the name ‘Literary Review.’ This journal has been founded by a group of literary friends. It is not our intention to create something unconventional just to be different, we only want to do something that is down-to-earth and solid, and concentrate on writing good articles.” The editorial team hoped readers would be able to accept this journal as a literary publication, but it is not difficult to see its implications for the socio-political environment of the day. In terms of content, Literary Review occupied a key position in the launching of modernism in Taiwan. It received a great deal of assistance from the United States Information Service, and in literature and art trends it was much influenced by US modernism. In addition, Literary Review’s writers and editors with their foundation in liberal thought, occupied a key role in ushering in the future and in discussions on, and the development of, modernism in Taiwan literature.

2.在1950年代反共之風盛行，夏濟安、吳魯芹、林以亮等人企圖為文學尋找自由的空間，在創刊號〈發刊詞〉上揭示：「我們希望讀者讀完本刊之後，能夠認為這本雜誌還稱得上是一本『文學雜誌』。本刊是幾個愛好文學的朋友所創辦的，我們不想在文壇上標新立異，我們只想腳踏實地，用心寫好幾篇文章」，編輯團隊如此希望讀者能認定這雜誌是文學刊物，對應當時的政治社會環境，不難發現其弦外之音。《文學雜誌》在內容上，對現代主義在台的開展，有其關鍵位置，在發行上多受美國新聞處贊助支持，在文藝思潮上也多有美國現代主義的身影，另外加上以自由主義思想為基礎的作家、編者群，為台灣文學的現代主義論述及創作的發展，建立承先啟後的關鍵位置。
