Taiwan Indigenous Voice, whose guiding principle is "Of indigenous people, of literature, of art, of culture, of the world," is the first periodical in Taiwan to give indigenous peoples a channel for voicing and writing their thoughts. It was founded in June 1993 by legislator Hua Jiazhi, first director of the Taiwan Indigenous People's Cu+M47ltural Development Association, who also founded Taiwan Indigenous Voice Biography Magazine. The first issue of Taiwan Indigenous Voice was released in November 1993. The editor-in-chief was Sun Dachuan, and the editing committee consisted of Kung Wenchi (Yosi Takun), Dianav Jenror, Tuobasi Tamapima, Adaw Palaf, Pasuya Poiconu, Sherman Lamboan, and Kao Teh-i (Janubark), mostly Aboriginal authors, writers and literary researchers who came to prominence in Taiwan's literary world in the 1990s. The publication's core philosophy is to advocate the reconstruction and propagation of Aboriginal culture, and, by means of words, strive for space for Aboriginal culture and discourse, providing a garden spot and creative space for discussion and expression of opinions.
In the first issue, there are 12 columns (TIV Special Topics, TIV Commentary, TIV Literature, TIV Arts, TIV Reviews, TIV Health, TIV Across the Strait, TIV International, Historical Outlines, Tribal History, TIV Journal, and TIV Season), featuring extensive coverage of Aboriginal-related subjects. Particularly worthy of attention is TIV Literature, which features writings and oral literature in both Chinese and indigenous languages, not only keeping pace with Aboriginal writers in Taiwan’s contemporary literary sphere, but also helping elevate the works of several generations of indigenous writers.
TIV went out of print in 2000. In all, 26 issues in 23 individual bound volumes (the 21st and 22nd, the 23rd and 24th, and the 25th and 26th issues were respectively printed in one volume) were published. During its seven years in production, the works of 39 Aboriginal writers were published. TIV also organized and assisted with numerous awards in indigenous literature, such as the First Taiwan Indigenous Literature Award in 1995 and the China Motor Corporation Indigenous Literature Prize in 2000, greatly boosting the visibility of Aboriginal literature and accumulating ample literary achievements.
