One volume

Description:
Edited by Hiroshi Nagasaki. Published by the Royal Society of Taiwanese Literature. A Japanese-language monthly. Vol. 1 No. 1, May 1, 1944. 110 pages.
Taiwan Bungei is a publication of the Royal Society of Taiwanese Literature, issued in Japanese. Basically it was a merger of two Japanese literary magazines: Bungei Taiwan and Taiwan Bungaku. There were six members of the editing committee: besides Zhang Wenhuan, the other five—Hojin Yano, Shatsuki Koyama, Takeshi Takemura, Hiroshi Nagasaki, and Mitsuru Nishikawa—were all Japanese. Yano, a major figure in charge of Taiwan Bungei as well as a standing director of the Royal Society of Taiwanese Literature, writes in his opening statement: "The future of this magazine is fully dependent on the writers who live on this island. As long as they are passionate about literature in service of the nation and are cognizant of our mission to guide the public, not only in thinking but also in terms of writing." Nishikawa states, "We comrades must dedicate ourselves to serving as literary ministers; literary devotion to the Emperor is essential." From these two statements it is not hard to discern this magazine's intense official quality and its relationship with the war machine of the Empire of Japan.
The first issue features the works of several well-known Taiwanese and Japanese writers, including Nature by Lu Heruo, Sousou by Hayao Hamada, and Taiwan North-South Railway by Mitsuru Nishikawa. Sousou and Taiwan North-South Railway, originally serialized in Bungei Taiwan, remained unfinished when the magazine ceased publication; their publication continued in Taiwan Bungei, and as such the magazine was seen as the successor to the Bungei Taiwan line. On the back cover are the words "Taiwan Literary Series," an ad for Lu Heruo's Clear Autumn and Reiko Sakaguchi's Zheng Family. Generally speaking, Taiwan Bungei was the property of the war machine, its style tending toward romanticism and nostalgia as a means to propagate the "literature of Imperial subjects." As such, the writers were frequently required to write pieces that echoed national policy, and were subject to considerable restrictions. The periodical ceased publication in January 1945; in all, eight issues were released.
