This book, also called In Plain Language, is a book of teaching materials and tools "written for those who wish to learn how to write in Chinese vernacular" by Zhang Wojun (a.k.a. Zhang Qingrong), a pioneer of Taiwan’s new literary movement. Zhang had prior experience editing materials such as Ma Guoying's Chinese Language Study Notes and Li Ming's Chinese Grammar Study Notes. The book is divided into three parts—"Commentary on the Chinese Language," "Varieties of Chinese," and "Differentiating Characters, Words, Phrases and Sentences"—containing a total of 16 articles. The content includes an overview of the Chinese language, as well as the uses of grammar, punctuation, function words and neologisms. Preceding the main body is "A Short Preface and Introduction" by Zhang; following the main body are the articles "Usage of Neologisms" and "A Discussion on Writing Chinese Horizontally."
In the introduction, Zhang writes, "We advocate the use of plain language in literature in Taiwan. The appeal to write in the vernacular is one that is widely supported. Consequently, the question of how to write in the vernacular is asked by many. I am asked this question many times by people known and unknown to me, and mostly I give them the above mentioned words for their reference, and recommend some good books for to them to read. But, after all, books from China are not easy to get; moreover there are no beginner books suitable for Taiwanese people to learn to write in the vernacular. As such, I had no choice but to think of a better way to help the Taiwanese people write in plain language correctly; this is why I undertook the Herculean task of writing a primer." This passage underscores his intense ambition to promote the vernacular movement in Taiwan and make Taiwanese literature widely accessible.

3.本書又名《白話文作法》，乃是台灣新文學運動的奠基者張我軍（張清榮）「為欲學讀、寫中國國語文（白話文）而編的」教材工具書。他參考了馬國英編著的《國語文講義》、黎明的《國語文法講義》等材料，將全書分為三編，收錄〈中國國語文的界說〉、〈中國國語文的種類〉、〈字、詞、語、句的區別〉共16篇文章，內容涵蓋國語文概說、文法、標點符號、虛字和新字的用法。正文前有張我軍撰寫的〈小引〉、〈導言〉，正文後則有〈新字用法〉、〈中文改用橫行的討論〉。
4.在導言中，張我軍寫道：「我們在台灣提倡白話文學，叫人寫白話文，大家也都贊成了，其結果『然則白話文要怎樣做』的疑問便由許多人發出來了。常有許多相識和不相識的朋友寫信相詰問，我大都是將上面的話說給他們參考，並點幾部好書給他們讀。但是究竟中國書不易入手，況且更沒有適合台灣人學作白話文（初步）的書，於是我便不得不再想一個較好的方法，使台灣人都會正確地寫作白話文，所以我才敢『婢作夫人』學起著書來了。」這段話正足以體現他在台灣推行白話文運動、以實現台灣文學「國語化」的強烈企圖心。
