Vegetable Garden: Nostalgic Musings of Taiwan is the first collection of essays published by scientist Sun Guanhan, which he did at age 53. How did this writer, who before age 50 had mostly written academic papers, turn to essay writing? It begins with his relationship with writer Bo Yang. Sun, having worked in the United States for many years, had the good fortune to return several times to Taiwan to give lectures, where he gained great exposure to the works of Taiwanese writers. He was especially enamored of the viewpoints expressed in Bo Yang's Soy Sauce Jar and the discourse surrounding this work, so he wrote a letter to Bo Yang, and thus began their friendship. With Bo Yang's encouragement, Sun began to wrote essays for the Independent Evening Post, and received excellent reviews. Thereafter he continued to express his musings, warnings and love about his homeland through words. These were later compiled and published as this book. The "vegetable garden" refers to a tiny haven in his back yard; when not working, Sun grew vegetables here, but it was also here that he became "intoxicated in reminiscence of the motherland." As such, his daughter Sun Shizhong wrote, in childish script, the words Vegetable Garden: Nostalgic Musings of Taiwan: My Father's Farm on the title page, echoing and binding the spirit of vegetable garden farming into the words in this work. This book was published in 1979 by Starlight Publishing under the name Caring and Kindness.

《菜園懷台雜思》是科學家孫觀漢於53歲時所出版的第一本雜文集，50歲以前主要撰寫學術論著的作者，何以轉向雜文寫作？這要從他與作家柏楊的定交因緣說起──長年在美國工作的孫觀漢，由於因緣際會曾數次返台講學，得以大量接觸台灣作家的作品，尤其欣賞柏楊的「醬缸」觀點及相關論述，遂以讀者的身分寫信給柏楊，從而開啟兩人的友誼。在柏楊的鼓勵下，孫觀漢開始在《自立晚報》發表文章，頗獲好評，自此便持續為文發抒對家國的反思、警醒與愛，其後集結出版，即為本書。題名「菜園」指的是家中後院那一方小小的天地，工作餘暇，孫觀漢不但在此種菜，同時也在這裡「沉醉於對祖國的懷念」；女兒孫世鍾因此在書名頁以稚拙的字體寫下「菜園懷台雜思──爸爸的耕作」，將菜園裡的心靈耕作與紙筆間的文字耕耘相互呼應連結。本書於1979年改由星光出版社發行，更名為《關懷與愛心》。
