Title:Rattan Chair
Category:Object
No. of Item:1
Dimension: 68 x 58.5 x 86cm
Description:Ye Shitao was accustomed to sitting in this rattan chair while writing and it was used since the 1960s for more than 30 years in his study. In 2007, Cheng Fangming published an article in the April issue of Unitas entitled “Listening to the Green Water in the Old City” that describes a visit he made to Ye Shitao in 1989: “When I saw his simple and shabby study, I was pained as if cut by a knife. The “wrath of Heaven” that he has written about is by no means just something in the spiritual realm. An old beat up rattan chair pressed up against a motley desk, the city noises just outside the window…. I had seen photos of him before in books sitting there writing. Because the photos were in black and white, it seemed to me an elegant space.” On this rattan chair, Ye sat and spoke up for Taiwanese literature and wrote An Outline History of Taiwanese Literary History, the first such book written focusing on an explicit Taiwanese consciousness.
