Title:
Walking and Singing
Category:
Book
Author:
Zhong Dingwen
No. of Item:
One volume
Dimension:
18.2*12.9*0.9cm
Description:
By Zhong Dingwen. Taipei: Taiwan Poetry (a Green Window Poetry Draft). Published in May 1951. 164 pages.
The cover of this book bears the inscription of Yu Youren and an illustration by Liang Zhongming of a figure playing a harp, echoing the poet's preface, titled "The Harp". When the Sino-Japanese War broke out, Zhong cast aside his pen to join the army, and stopped publishing poems. Only at the urging of his friends Dai Wangshu and Ai Qing years later, long after the close of the war, did he start writing poetry again ("I took up my long-lost harp," he writes); his passion for poetry reignited.
The short collection of poems titled Walking and Singing is Zhong's "first virgin anthology of new poems in over 20 years." The book is divided into two volumes, the first containing pieces he wrote after he came to Taiwan, and the second a record of his pre-Taiwan works. There are 26 poems in all, many of them exceeding 30 or 40 lines. The content mainly covers themes of longing and sentimentality, as well as narratives. Poems such as "Twilight at Kaohsiung Harbor", "Song of Tamsui River", "Clear View at Keelung", and "Chikan Towers Memories", despite invoking local Taiwanese scenes, are replete with a sense of nostalgia for China, and in them we can see the effects of changing times on the writer. Dai Duheng in his essay "An epigraph of Walking and Singing," notes that Zhong's poetic style is "succinct, fluid and vigorous," "full of power yet not tending toward crudeness, full of feeling yet not tending toward morbidity," and that he is a "poet who is not influenced by trends, but willing to walk his own path."
