This book is Hu Pinqing's first modern collection of poems. It is divided into two sections: Mermaid's Song and Black Musings. This is a compilation of 42 works, among them being a poem titled "Artificial Flowers", from which the title of this anthology is derived. Hu has long been known in literary circles for translation and prose works, but her literary career started out in the area of modern poetry. In the preface of this book, the author provides rebuttals to many definitions of poetry at that time, particularly the idea that it is a dialectic between the lyrical and the intellectual. She first refutes the viewpoint that "modern people who write lyrical poetry have fallen behind," maintaining that poetry is the literary form most suited to expressing emotion and that "emotion is eternal." As such, poetry is an attempt to "convey one's feelings and eternal sincerity through fresh language," an expression of the "true voice of the heart." It as if the "artificial flowers" she has gathered symbolize unfading truth, virtue, beauty and love. Though this is an early work of Hu, it still allows the reader to peep into the literary view of her lyricism and use of poetic language, and link together her long creative journey.

本書為胡品清第一部現代詩集，全書分為「鮫人之歌」、「黑色的聯想」兩部，總計收錄42首作品，其中一首名為〈人造花〉的詩作，即為詩集題名的由來。胡品清歷來以翻譯與散文書寫享譽文壇，然其文學生涯的開展，實則以「現代詩」為起點。在本書的序言中，作者對於當時諸多有關「現代詩」的界定，特別是「抒情」抑或「主智」的辯證，提出回應──她首先反駁「現代人寫抒情詩即為落伍」的觀點，認為詩才是最適合表現情感的文類，而「情感是永恆的」，因此寫詩就成為一種「以不陳腐的語言表現自己的感覺和永恆的情愫」的嘗試，是「真實心聲」的表達，就如同她所珍藏的那株「人造花」，象徵著永不凋零的真、善、美與愛。本書雖為胡品清早期創作，卻可讓讀者藉此一窺其抒情的文學觀與詩化語言的應用，如何貫穿其漫長的創作旅途。
