Title:
Gloom and Freedom
Category:
Book
Author:
Akajiro Oka/Zhang Wojun
No. of Item:
One volume
Dimension:
18.7*13.7*2.5cm
Description:
By Akajiro Oka, translated by Zhang Wojun. Published by Beixin Books, Shanghai, in 1929. 334 pages.
Akajiro Oka (1868-1944), a Japanese zoologist and social critic, was one of the earliest Japanese scholars to study the languages of the world. He was also a very important proponent of evolutionary theory. Gloom and Freedom is a collection of Oka's essays published between 1912 and 1920 in periodicals such as Chuokoron, Yuben, and Taiyo, many having to do with current affairs, education and people's imaginings of life in the future, as well as personal reflections of World War I. In all there are 18 essays, including "Nature's Revenge", "If Man Does Not Offend God, God Becomes the Devil", and "The Origin of Freedom and Equality". Before the main text is a preface by Oka, and at the end is an essay by the author titled "A Critique of Modern Civilization". From the translator's notes at the end of the essay, we can determine that Zhang Wojun translated the book around 1928.
The copy of Gloom and Freedom housed by the museum features green paper binding, with the book title and the names of the author and translator printed on the cover in gold-stamped lettering. Due to its age, the cover is quite faded. The title page bears the collector's seal and signature, and the endpapers are marked as follows: "Zhang Wojun is a master who pioneered modern literature in Taiwan. This book was purchased from a book stall around 1951. The front and back covers and copyright page are damaged; it has been over 60 years since it was re-bound. I hereby donate it to the collection of the National Museum of Taiwan Literature." From this, we know that the book not only has valuable historic significance, it is also an important testament to Zhang's ability to translate from Japanese as well as to his contributions to the new literary movement.
