Title:Hong Qisheng Family Photo
Category:Photograph (picture)
Author:unknown
No. of Item:1 photograph
Dimension: 12.1×17.3cm
Description:In 1906 after the Fifth Governor-General of Taiwan, Sakuma Samata, took office, he forced the Taiwanese to unbind feet and cut off the queue, previously something they had been able to decide on their own, by making this a “Hoko Regulation.” For Hong Qisheng, “opposed in speech and action” to the Japanese, he regarded bound feet and the queue as symbolizing the “distinction between Chinese and barbarians” and insisted on keeping his queue. To avoid the Japanese police whose responsibility it was to cut off queues, he went into hiding, even to the point of not leaving his house for days at a time. Sometime around 1915 Hong Qisheng was finally unable to hide any longer from the scissors of the Japanese police and was forced to cut off his queue. This filled him with great anguish and he wrote “Fleeing from the Queue Cutters” and “Lamenting the Loss of the Queue” expressing his anguish. This is a valuable memento photograph that shows Yancai, the eldest son (back row, far left), Yanqiu, second son (front row, second from the left), elder brother, Hong Wenrui (front row, third from the right), and nephews together with Hong Qisheng (front row, third from left) before his queue was cut off.
