- GDESC:雌雄相異，雄鳥略大。虹膜-雄鳥黃色、雌鳥棕褐色。嘴-雄鳥黑色、雌鳥褐至橘黃色。腳橘黃色。雄鳥繁殖羽頭、頸紫綠、具金屬光澤，嘴寬長、末端呈湯匙狀。體背暗褐、夾雜褐色及白色飾羽。胸及腰側白，腹及體側栗褐，尾上、下覆羽黑綠，尾羽白色。雌鳥頭、頸褐色、具暗色細縱紋，有暗色過眼線。體暗褐、具淡色羽緣。雄鳥非繁殖羽似雌鳥，但虹膜黃色，嘴黑色，頭、頸常殘留斑駁黑色。未成年雄鳥似雌鳥，唯嘴近黑。較年幼雄鳥嘴似雌鳥，難區分，但虹膜較黃，臉、頸較白，翼上覆羽藍灰色。飛行時，雄鳥翼上覆羽藍灰，翼鏡綠色、上緣白色。雌鳥覆羽鼠灰、綠色翼鏡較不明顯。群聚性，常與小水鴨形成大群。用鏟形嘴喙左右掃動濾食，攝食浮游生物、小型螺、昆蟲、種籽或植物碎屑。
