      雌性成體，吻肛長：493 mm，尾長：63 mm。
      赤背松柏根最大約可達95公分，身體圓胖型，頭部橢圓，吻端較短，後頭部有一深褐色之V字型斑紋。體背面中央有一條橙紅色之縱紋，自頸部延伸至尾部，體中段鱗列數為19列。
      分布於臺灣全島和蘭嶼1,000公尺以下地區。另在中國西南、中南部地區和越南也有分布。日、夜行性，喜棲於開墾地、樹林之邊緣地帶及灌木叢等環境。卵生，生殖期在夏季，每窩約可產卵3～6枚，剛出生的仔蛇約有13公分。在蘭嶼赤背松柏根會鑽入沙中攝食綠蠵龜的蛋，這或許是利用氣味的引導，而能迅速的找尋到海龜巢穴。以蜥蜴、爬蟲類的蛋等為食。
