- GDESC:保育等級：International Union for Conservation of Nature紅皮書中屬低危物種(Least Concern)類別。
  
  型態：全身體色成灰褐色，腹部則接近赤紅色，故名為赤腹松鼠。軀幹與四肢毛皮為短毛，尾部則為蓬鬆長毛，主要功能為平衡之用，因此台語又稱作「蓬鼠」。
  
  生態：赤腹松鼠是台灣三種松鼠裡適應力最強、最常見的松鼠，從平地到海拔三千公尺高山都有其蹤跡。日行性，除交配哺育期之外喜單獨行動，樹棲性，會在樹上以細枝樹葉築巢而居。主要以植物的花、果、葉為食，偶會吃食小型昆蟲。過去因為原始森林大量遭受破壞，改為人工造林，導致赤腹松鼠的食源消失，轉而啃食樹皮為生，因而被冠以森林有害動物之名。
  
  形質：體長約20公分，體重約501公克。
