Length:56.5 x Width:73 (cm)
In 1969, at the age of 61, Kuo completed Boats on the Tamsui River based on memory. In the foreground are colorful junks. On both sides of the bow are fisheyes considered to protect fishermen from becoming lost at sea. In the middle distance, cloud and mist float above the water, fusing together the space between foreground and distant mountains. Guanyin Mountain partially hidden in the cloud and mist serves as a contrast to the white-capped waves. It is clear that this artist worked hard to create this spatial arrangement. Kuo grew up along the Tamsui River in the Dadaocheng area of Taipei. He was very familiar with the junks that traveled between the Tamsui Harbor and Xiamen, China. In this work, Boats on the Tamsui River, the junks are complemented by the landscape of Guanyin Mountain. It reveals the unpredictable weather conditions of this area, and serves both as a historical and esthetic work.
