Mei-Hua Lai was born in 1948 in Chiayi. Since childhood she loved to draw and paint and had curiosity about the world. In middle school, she came to Tainan to study, and under the artistic inspiration of her art teacher Che-Tsai Shen, she began to learn basic techniques as well as to access various art books, which proved to be eye-opening. Outside of class, Lai often went to bookstores on holidays to read foreign art books. She began to think about the meaning of painting and creation, and her creative thinking gradually moved from external reality to the translation of internal feelings. From the first year of high school, Lai began to experiment with her inner thoughts on canvas, and in her senior year she completed her first imaginative works, in which she created floral shapes and fluid forms in magnificent colors, establishing the main axis of her artistic
career. After her marriage, she worked simultaneously as creator and housewife, and although she was unable to devote herself to creative work, she took the time to make sketches and record her feelings, creating a record of her time. Lai’s diary, in other words, was her form of creation. All sensory experience is the source of inspiration for Lai’s creations, whether the everyday sweet and sour emotions of daily life, or encounters with music, drama, and books. Her works have been collected by the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, the Tainan Museum of Fine Arts, the National Cheng Hsiu University of Science and Technology, and the National Taiwan Normal University. Mei-Hua Lai uses inner images and symbols to the fullest in order to express a realization of life, fate, and family. The space of these images presents what Lai sees, perceives, and senses as a creator: the situation of women.
