Introduction:Reed wind instruments are found in many cultures and include instruments as different as the bagpipe, oboe and suona. The reeds produce sound in the same way as two leaves do when they are blown on while held between hands. In the bagpipe several wooden pipes are used to amplify and tune the reeds. These reeds play fixed notes from a preset chord and are called drones. Only one pipe contains holes that can be used to modify the notes and play a melody. Bagpipers exhale into a compressed bag held under their arms to build up a reservoir of air that can then be used to maintain a continuous and regular airflow onto the reeds. In some variants, like this pastoral pipe, the air comes from a small pump placed under the arm of the player, enabling the musician to sing while playing the instrument.
