Introduction:Music is a strong part of religious and community life in Africa, where celebrations involving singing, dancing and drumming are also an opportunity for individuals to affirm their social status.

Entenga conical drums of different sizes are always played ensemble and may accompany singing. Only the large end is beaten, either by hand or wood-sticks. Both ends of the drum are however covered by animal skin. Before being sealed, a small piece of the animal whose skin has been used in making the drum is enclosed as a token inside. This object rattles when the instrument is played and is considered to be the soul of the drum.
