Introduction:This exhibit was produced by Holtzapffel and Deyerlein, a famous British manufacturer of tools and lathes in the early 19th century. The company was established in London in 1804 and was known for its precision machining technology and production of high-quality cutting tools and other related tools. It produced more than 1,000 lathes.
This lathe with the serial number of 489 is one of the 1,000-plus lathes produced by Holtzapffel and Deyerlein. It is powered by the foot pedal which drives the large pulley through the crank and then the small pulley through the belt to enable fast rotation of the workpiece. The workpiece is mounted on the chuck to produce the “ornamental turning” of the workpiece under the cutting tools. This type of turning is a complex processing technique that can give intricate and diverse shapes and patterns to the cross-section of an ordinary circular workpiece. It is suitable for the processing of different materials such as wood, bone, ivory, and metal.
