Introduction:In the 1880s and 1890s, the typewriter had become a commercially profitable product. The Remington No.2, which was launched in 1878, became the first best-selling typewriter and triggered a breakthrough growth of the industry. It was not until 1881 that a worthy competitor, the Caligraph typewriter, emerged.
This Caligraph No.1 was produced by the American Writing Machine Company. Caligraph was ranked as one of the top three brands of keyboard typewriters along with Remington and Hammond in the 1880s.
