Introduction:The tsuzumi is one of the few percussion instruments that can play notes and melodies. The instrument consists of two membranes, usually made of horse leather, at either end of the main body and which are pressed against it by a decorative but essential cord. Players hold, with their left hand, the instrument by this cord against their right shoulder and hit the forward facing membrane with their right hand by folding their arm backwards. At the same time players use their left hand to modify the tension of the cord, therefore tightening or releasing the two membranes, which produces the notes. Although it is possible to play a full scale, only four different notes are used in the traditional music of the tsuzumi.
