Introduction:This sewing machine, “The Monarch”, was produced by The Royal Sewing Machine Company, which was established in Birmingham, the UK in 1868 and closed in 1888. Though the company only lasted 20 years, its names “Royal” and “The Monarch”, lasted much longer in the sewing machine industry.
In 1883, an American sewing machine company in Illinois renamed itself as “Royal Sewing Machine Company” and later gave its products the model name of “New Royal”. After the end of WWII, the introduction of sewing machine production technology was part of the reconstruction program in Japan during the US occupation period (1945-1952). During that period of time, sewing machines using technologies from the US were given the brand names of “Royal” and “The Monarch”.
The backgrounds and histories of the same company name and model name respectively from the UK, the US, and Japan reflect those days when the “production of sewing machines” made significant contributions to the economy and people’s livelihood.
