Ecuador was, originally part of the Inca Empire, colonized by Spain in 1532. Although declared independence on August 10, 1809, it was still occupied by the Spanish colonial army. In 1822, Ecuador achieved independence and joined Gran Colombia in 1825. After Gran Colombia was dissolved in 1830, Ecuador emerged as the Republic of Ecuador. However, after the founding of the nation, political situation in Ecuador had been in turmoil, one coup after another. The helm of the state had been changed hands from a civilian government to a military government, and vice versa, for nineteen times. The 10th day of August 1965 was the 57th anniversary of Ecuador's National Day.
