Introduction:Li Lan was born in Miaoli County's Toufen, and graduated from the Department of Art at National Taiwan Normal University, specializing in ink painting. After working at several schools, she pursued further study in Japan and served as deputy director of the Li Shih-chiao Art Museum. Over the many years she has been actively engaged in creative work and art history research, producing substantial results. Her published works include "Li Lan: A Collection of Poetry and Paintings," "In Praise of the Earth," "Dialogues between Spirit and Nature," "The Watercolor World of Li Tsu-pan," "A Master of His Generation: Li Shih-chiao," and "Research on the Paintings of Mu-chi."
Growing up in the countryside, from an early Li developed a love of depicting natural beauty; she has traveled widely in search of inspiration, creating distinctive landscape imagery in a personal style. Drawing on these unique experiences, Li gradually shifted from the understated literary quality of ink painting toward vividly expressive oil painting, committed to bringing forth the distinctiveness of the modern artist's individual voice. For her, what the eyes see and what the body and mind experience are of equal importance: scenery must be absorbed into one's own thinking and expression before it can become a painting, and for this reason she places particular importance on the mood and spiritual quality of a scene.
This work depicts the year-round snow-capped peaks of the Yushan Range along with the wildflowers blooming in profusion across a mountainside—their fragrance everywhere—and the untamed alpine plants. The dynamic, broadly Z-shaped composition draws the eye from near to far in an engaging manner, creating the artist's ideal of scenic beauty. Bold use of high chroma and high brightness conveys the heat and luminosity appropriate to an equatorial summer, allowing the vibrant natural world to be perfectly recreated on the canvas. Even within this magnificent, sweeping landscape, an atmosphere of serenity, calm, and happiness pervades; through gentle, light, and joyful brushwork and color, the artist successfully conveys her personal experience of the landscape to the viewer, engendering both visual and olfactory resonance.
