Description:Written during the Chinese New Year celebration in a Year of the Pig, this nostalgic piece by Beatrice Lee refutes the stigmas surrounding pigs, namely that they are dirty, lazy, and slow-witted. She criticizes how people consume every part of the pig, from head to toe, inside and out, to satisfy their own appetites. Having grown up in a family of farmers, she recalls her childhood days surrounded by pigs. Back in the day, families in the countryside would raise pigs for the Chinese New Year celebrations. Because Lee’s mother had been a vegetarian for years, the task work of feeding the pigs fell onto the author. The fascinating interactions between the little girl that was Lee and the piglets, as well as the conflicting emotions before and after slaughtering, are revealed in her words. When the author heard about religious sins, reincarnation, and karma from her Uncle A-rong, her young mind became conflicted between cultural tradition and the sin of killing. She still thinks about her childhood friendship with the pigs on the farm many years later.

摘要:本筆資料是作者於農曆豬年的懷舊之作，從為「豬」平反其髒、懶、蠢等既定的污名想像，到省思人類對豬隻從頭到尾、從裡到外為滿足口腹之慾而「物盡其用」，引發作者回憶童年時期與豬為伍的點滴。早期農村家庭養豬是為了過年佳餚，母親長年唸佛茹素，餵豬工作因而落在吳媽和作者身上，字裡行間流露出小女孩與小豬的生趣互動，以及宰殺前後的矛盾心情。宗教信仰和阿榮伯、四叔口中的輪迴、業報等民間傳說，讓小小年紀的作者在「文化傳統」與「殺生罪孽」之間糾結、擺盪，直到多年後行文當下，仍掛念著那一段與豬的童年友情。（文／陳秀玲）
