Title:Fixing the Burial
Category:Manuscript
Author:Wang Weilian
No. of Item:4 pages
Dimension: 27.1×19.1cm
Description:Wang Weilian was a descendant of the writer Jiang Gui (1908-1980). The main narrative of this piece tells of Wang’s search for a burial place for his father, Jiang Gui, whose original name was Wang Lindu. He joined the military during the Sino-Japanese war and arriving in Taiwan after mustering out of the military, Wang was unsuccessful in business but had to look after his sick wife and three sons, meanwhile he suffered a series of setbacks. He was without a fixed home or address yet every evening he would write without stop and did publish many long works. According to Wang Weilian, Jiang Gui died on December 17, 1980. He was given an imposing funeral ceremony by people in the arts and literary world and the scholar Chen Kuimiao proposed that he be buried “in the writer Yang Kui’s place”—meaning Yang Kui’s East Pacific Garden in Taichung. However, when he started the process of selecting a site, Wang was hampered by issue of property rights of the landowners and by economic factors. At the same time in order to avoid the later necessity of reburial and other considerations, he finally selected a burial site in the Taichung Municipal Cemetery. Because he did not comply with the wishes of those literary personalities of the older generation, the author feared his intentions would in future years be distorted and misunderstood and so he wrote this piece by way of explanation. This is why on the first page of the manuscript in the blank portion of the sidebar there is the explanatory remark: “This is only as explanation and not meant for publication.” Based on the events mentioned in the article and the time sequence, this piece was most likely completed after March 29, 1981.
