The Buddhist Association of the Republic of China presented this gift on October 31, 1952. The silver shield plate is set in a glass display case, raised on a black openwork wooden base overlaid with red flannelette, and beset with a silver shield engraved with, on the upper part, dragon carvings, and centered gilded celebratory inscriptions "Buddha Life Infinite," with a dedication "In celebration of the 66th birthday of President Chiang," and on the lower part, "Respectfully, all members of the Buddhist Association of the Republic of China."
The Buddhist Association of the Republic of China was founded in 1911 in mainland China, and formerly known as "The General Buddhist Assembly of the Republic of China," chaired by Jichan. In 1938, the organization was renamed "The Buddhist Society of the Republic of China," and Taixu served as President. In 1939, the organization held a congress of provincial delegates in Shanghai, was renamed the "Buddhist Association of the Republic of China," and elected Yuanying as President. On April 8, 1947, the organization held the first national congress in Nanjing, registered formally as the "Buddhist Association of the Republic of China," and elected Changkya Khutukhtu as the first President of the association. In 1949, the association followed the ROC government to relocate to Taiwan. Elder Baisheng and others set up "Taipei Office, Buddhist Association of the Republic of China" at Shipu Temple in Taipei, and the association was authorized to resume its status. On August 25, 1952, the association held the second national congress at Shandao Temple in Taipei and elected Changkya Khutukhtu as President of the association again. Since then, the association has been operated normally. In October the same year, Chiang Kai-shek celebrated his 66th birthday, and on this karma, the association presented the celebratory words "Buddha Life Infinite," from "Infinite Life Buddha," to the head of the state.
