Vietnam is one of the areas that overseas Chinese inhabit. Chinese account for over a tenth of Vietnam's population, and mostly, more than 500,000, live in Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon City). They have had a close relationship with the Republic of China all along. In 1969, Vietnam, coincided with the Vietnam War (1961-1975), suffered the aggression of Viet Cong from North Vietnam. The Vietnamese resented the Communist Party and was one of the main allies of the Republic of China in anti-communism efforts, and overseas Chinese in Vietnam yarned for the Republic of China.
