Lin Lung-ta (1954- ) was born in Dajia Town, Taichung County (now Dajia District, Taichung City). Under his father's influence, he liked to practice Chinese calligraphy near pools of water since childhood. When he studied at Qingshui Junior High School, he was under the instruction of the principal, Tsao Wei-chu. While studying at China Medical University, he was taught successively Shih Jen-hao and Chen Chi-chuan. After obtaining a master's degree in pharmacy in 1981, he entered the Food and Drug Administration under the Ministry of Health and Welfare, and was later promoted to Division Chef in 1984. In 1986, he was awarded first place in the Taiwan Provincial Art Exhibition as well as the honor of being permanently exempt from review for future art exhibitions. In 1989, he left the public office to run Kyoka Art Center. In 1993, he entered the Province Governor's office and taught part-time at China Medical University. He was awarded the Ministry of Education's Literary and Artistic Creation Award, as well as the Sun Yat Sen Literary and Artistic Creation Award in 1994. His works were collected by the National Museum of History in 2001, and he became an associate professor at National Taiwan University of Arts in 2003.
Lin Lung-ta learned by imitating many historic rubbings from stone inscriptions; thus, he became proficient at semi-cursive, cursive, seal, and clerical script. His calligraphy is static yet dynamic, combining meaning into its form. The characters are majestic and vigorous, simple yet elegant, traditional yet innovative. Lin Lung-ta is particularly dedicated to the copying of the Buddhist scriptures on yellow, white, and golden paper. It is dignified and agile, blending the ancient and modern, continuous with outstanding perseverance, and both gorgeous and solemn that makes the work widely recognized by society. There is also a collection of his scripture works at Fagushan. Critics consider his seal script elegant and ancient, his clerical script simple yet vigorous, his regular script neat and smooth, and his semi-cursive script unrestrained yet charming.
This work was completed in semi-cursive script, in which the interpretation is, "The sky is covered with blue clouds, the ground coated with yellowed leaves. To the water's edge spread autumn colors, cold mist hovers over green waters. The setting sun reflects off mountain peaks, sky and waters connected in harmony. The grass feels not, for more grows beyond the setting sun like unrestrained nostalgia. Drowning in homesickness, which snaps at my heals as I travel. Sleepless nights prevail, unless sweet dreams spare me some rest. Leaning over railings atop towers, I admire the moon alone. Down a drink of spirits into my saddened soul, into wistful tears they drip." The layout is steady, the degree of seriousness is perfectly balanced, and the structure is evenly spread out. There is some of Chao Sung-hsueh's charms, yet it is more agile, while the incorporation of bronze techniques adds to the stableness of the work.
