Chen You-Bing (1947-), also known as Youbing and Taiyi, is a Singaporean of Chaozhou descent from Chenghai County, Guangdong Province, and a renowned ink painter. At the age of 13, he began to study traditional Chinese painting under the famous artist Fan Chang-Gan. With a creative career spanning half a century, he was awarded the "Efficiency Medal" by the President of Singapore in 1977. In 1988, he won the Excellence Award at the Beijing International Modern Ink Painting Exhibition. He has participated in numerous exhibitions, including the Singapore National Day Art Exhibition (1964-1975), the Finland Art Exhibition, the Taipei International Ink Painting Exhibition (1981), the São Paulo International Biennial in Brazil (1985), the South Korea Asian Games Exhibition (1986), a solo exhibition at the Beijing Chinese Painting Research Institute (1987), the Mannheim Art Exhibition in Germany (1990), the East-West Modern Painting Exhibition in Glasgow, Scotland (1991), the 2nd International Ink Painting Exhibition in Shenzhen (1992), and a solo exhibition at the China Art Museum (2002).
Chen You-Bing's artistic achievements have been widely recognized. He once said: "People call me a master, a craftsman, a grandmaster, but these are individual opinions. I will always be an artist who believes in truth, kindness and tolerance. His painting style is simple and straightforward, with a deep Zen flavor. He skillfully uses the natural rendering properties of ink and paint on rice paper, skillfully controlling the variation of dry and wet, and creating a world of interesting and imaginative ink colors.
According to him, the formation of this simple painting style comes mainly from learning Falun Dafa since 1992. After that, his works "purified orthodox ink painting, returned to simplicity, reached the three great realms of simplicity, spontaneity, and vitality, and embodied the highest realm of traditional Chinese painting of upholding simplicity and embracing truth.” For him, the highest realm is to express the true self through traditional brush and ink, and naturally present robustness, steadfastness, and simplicity. Like the ink lotus in his work, it transcends form with just a few strokes to capture the spirit, with bold and unrestrained composition, vigorous brushwork and wet ink, the scenery merges with spiritual meditation, reaching the realm of pure ideal.
