沈禎(1952- )，台灣台東人，政戰學校藝術系畢業，師從李奇茂，學習水墨人物畫，曾任淡江大學駐校藝術家、國父紀念館審查委員、李奇茂美術館館長，並於台灣藝術大學、淡江大學及政戰學校任教，任元智大學藝術與設計學系副教授，是台灣中生代實力派的多元專長畫家，2012年作品「中華聖母」巨幅水墨畫作獲梵蒂岡教宗接見與教廷收藏，乃極高的榮耀。
沈禎的作品多次獲得國家獎項，並在國內外舉辦百餘場個展、聯展，公私立機構典藏無數，2003年7月前往澳洲伯斯市的Edith Cowan University進修視覺藝術博士，本作「柏斯市的行人」即為此主題創作。沈禎的水墨風格與傳統大為不同，相較於傳統的寫意技法，沈禎以細膩的觀察、生動的筆觸，寫實的手法呈現出世界各地不同的風俗民情，宗教傳統，在地的種族文化，人與人之間的情感等生活上的題材。畫風獨樹一幟且風靡國際畫壇。
本作在人物表現上，以寫實的方式呈現，帶有感情的筆鋒把所見所聞的人生百態畫出來，靜觀自然萬象，真實反映內在情感，市井小民的生活的樣貌，透過素描為基礎，表情的補捉，動作的刻劃，將柏斯市的行人生動地描繪，相同的衣著間墨色的變化，清楚地表現出體態與表情，以虛幻的背景到出人生的飄浮不定，落款留下創作的心境，為本作帶來思考空間。(502字)

Shen Chen (1952-), a native of Taitung, Taiwan, graduated from the Art Department of Fu Hsing Kang College, National Defense University (FHK), where he studied figure painting in ink under Li Chi-Mao. He has served as an artist-in-residence at Tamkang University, a review committee member at the Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall, and the director of the Li Chi-Mao Art Museum. He has also taught at the Taiwan University of Arts, Tamkang University, and the FHK, as well as being an associate professor in the Department of Art and Design at Yuan Ze University. Recognized as a highly skilled mid-generation Taiwanese artist with a diverse artistic repertoire. The 2012 large-scale ink painting “Chinese Madonna” was presented to the Pope at the Vatican and added to the Vatican’s collection, marking a great honor.

Shen Chen’s works have earned numerous national awards, and he has held over a hundred solo and group exhibitions both in Taiwan and abroad, with many pieces collected by public and private institutions. In July 2003, he traveled to Edith Cowan University in Perth, Australia, to pursue a PhD in Visual Arts, during which he created this work, “Pedestrians in Perth.” Shen’s ink painting style significantly departs from traditional approaches. Rather than employing conventional expressive brushwork, he adopts meticulous observation, dynamic brushstrokes, and a realistic technique to depict diverse cultural customs, religious traditions, local ethnic identities, and human relationships worldwide. His distinctive artistic style has earned recognition in the international art scene.

In this artwork, Shen takes a realistic approach to portraying human figures, using expressive brush techniques to capture life’s many facets. He observes the world with a quiet gaze, reflecting genuine inner emotions and the everyday lives of ordinary people. Built upon a foundation of sketching, the piece showcases precise facial expressions and carefully rendered movements, vividly bringing Perth’s pedestrians to life. The interplay of ink tones within similar clothing styles effectively conveys differences in body posture and facial expressions, while the blurred background suggests the transient and unpredictable nature of life. The inscription left on the piece encapsulates the artist’s contemplative state during its creation, offering space for deeper reflection.
