徐谷菴(1926- ),湖南桃源人,字君壽,號心畫齋主人,曾以第一名優異成績畢業於南京美術專科學校。南京為文化古都,亦是畫家匯聚之地,由於地緣關係所致,故受四周如浙、吳、海上諸派影響,受各派大師指點,並且盡得名家之精隨,畫風瀟灑明確,以簡潔之筆法,展現其筆墨情趣,除此之外亦好寫生,常跋山涉水,四處體悟自然並且師法古人,體會寫意精神。徐谷菴也擅長花卉魚鳥,表現手法生動有趣,拙樸的筆法帶有簡樸的美感。
自古以來,寫意畫便力求筆情墨趣,具有抽象意義且融合了作者的性情與萬物的靈性,在意境上有較大的突破,技法上充分活用墨色與乾溼濃淡的水分變化,且與色彩相互交織,得其氣韻生動之感。徐谷菴不僅掌握其中,更時常攻研畫論,註有〈國畫源流〉、〈清代院畫〉、〈國畫六法〉、〈中國花鳥淺說〉等著作,並創辦《書畫家》藝術雜誌,對水墨界貢獻良多。
本作《我愛國花》描繪的即是國花–梅花,梅花具有三蕾五瓣,代表著三民主義以及五權憲法,可耐寒冬,堅貞剛潔,代表國格崇高的象徵。本作主角明顯而突出,枝幹蒼勁有力,其墨色深淺分明,與一片雪白的朵朵梅花相映成趣。布局動線活潑,如同梅花正在寒風中搖擺一般生動,筆法乾淨俐落,藉以彰顯梅花的尊貴與氣節。(500字)
Hsu Ku-An (1926-), born in Taoyuan, Hunan, is also known by the courtesy name Junshou and the pseudonym Master of Xin Hua Zhai. He graduated top of his class from Nanjing Art Academy. Nanjing, a historic cultural capital and hub for artists, provided Hsu with a fertile environment influenced by the Zhejiang, Wu, and Shanghai schools. Under the guidance of various masters, Hsu absorbed the essence of their styles, developing a clear and graceful painting style characterized by simple yet expressive brushwork. Additionally, he enjoyed sketching from life, often traveling extensively to immerse himself in nature, learning from ancient masters and capturing the spirit of freehand brushwork. Xu excels in painting flowers, fish, and birds, employing lively and engaging techniques that convey a rustic simplicity and charm.
Traditionally, freehand painting strives for abstract expression, blending the artist’s temperament with the spirit of nature, creating breakthroughs in artistic conception. This technique makes full use of the variations in ink and water, with their interplay of wet and dry, thick and thin, and blends them with colors to achieve a vivid and dynamic effect. Xu not only masters these techniques but also extensively researches painting theories. He has authored works such as "The Origins of Chinese Painting," "Court Painting of the Qing Dynasty," "The Six Principles of Chinese Painting," and "A Brief Introduction to Chinese Bird-and-Flower Painting." He also founded the "Painters and Calligraphers" art magazine, significantly contributing to the ink painting community.
This work, "I Love the National Flower," depicts the national flower of China—the plum blossom. With its three buds and five petals, the plum blossom symbolizes the Three Principles of the People and the Five-Power Constitution. Resilient against the harsh winter, it represents integrity and nobility. The focal point of the painting is clear and prominent, with strong, vigorous branches rendered in varying shades of ink, contrasting beautifully with the pure white plum blossoms. The composition is lively, capturing the movement of the blossoms swaying in the cold wind. The clean and crisp brushwork highlights the plum blossom's elegance and steadfast spirit.
