Commonly referred to as “Sanbai Academy”, the Beijing Sanbai Academy of Calligraphy and Painting is an interdepartmental cultural institution jointly formed by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, the State Council, the National People’s Congress, the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, and the People’s Liberation Army. It operates directly under the National Moral Education Organizational Committee. The academy is led by a president and an executive president, overseeing both internal and external affairs. Currently, the academy has over 1,000 members. It initially centered around generals and provincial- and ministerial-level leaders but has gradually expanded to include domestic and international artists. The headquarters is located in Beijing, within the International Liaison Department of the CPC Central Committee. Additionally, branch academies have been established in Shanghai, Chongqing, Jilin Province, Hebei Province, Shandong Province, and Guangdong Province.
The academy primarily focuses on calligraphy, painting, and seal carving, facilitating artistic exchanges through touring exhibitions and large-scale collaborative art gatherings. Its mission is to enhance cultural exchange while fostering the spiritual development of the nation. The academy also houses a collection of over a hundred calligraphic works by the founding leaders of the People’s Republic of China, which are utilized for educational and charitable purposes. The name “Sanbai” (Three Hundreds) reflects the academy’s commitment to excellence in three key aspects: (1) 100 points in politics – Members must demonstrate loyalty to the Party and patriotism while supporting national political initiatives. (2) 100 points in art – Artists must maintain a high artistic standard, dedicating themselves to the inheritance and promotion of traditional Chinese culture. (3) 100 points in charity – Members are expected to uphold a spirit of public welfare and compassion, contributing to social service.
This artwork is a collective creation by artists from Sanbai Academy, titled “Mazu Protecting China.” The painting exhibits meticulous craftsmanship and vibrant coloring. Mazu is depicted wearing a ceremonial crown and an imperial yellow robe, standing amid clouds with her hands clasped together in a solemn and dignified atmosphere. Through this theme, the artists aim to foster cultural exchange on folk religious traditions, promote virtuous customs, and pray for social harmony and world peace, aligning with the academy’s founding mission.
