Ahmet Coktan
Ahmet Coktan (1962-) is a professional water marbling and paper sculpture artist from Istanbul, Turkey. He studied water marbling under three renowned masters: Hikmet Barutçugil, Alparslan Babaoğlu, and Fuat Başar. In 1990, he received professional certification from the latter two. Since then, he has been highly active in his home country and frequently travels abroad for teaching and demonstrations.

In 1992, he published “Türk Ebru Sanat”(The Art of Turkish Water Marbling) and began offering classes. He was invited to Japan’s “Turkish Culture City” to teach for a year. He has also participated in joint exhibitions, conferences, and workshops in Turkey, Australia, the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, and Japan. In addition, he has been featured in television and radio interviews and has held a total of 37 solo exhibitions. In 2013, he was invited by the Department of Turkish Language at National Chengchi University to visit Taiwan and demonstrate his techniques.

Ebru (Water marbling)—“Ebru” is a Turkish term meaning “floating dye technique,” a traditional art form with a 700-year history. In Taiwan, it is referred to as “water transfer printing.” The process involves placing natural pigments into a shallow tray filled with a water-based gel. Using a fine needle, the artist manipulates the pigments to create marble-like patterns. A sheet of white paper is then carefully placed on the surface to absorb the colors before being lifted and dried. The popularity of this art form is closely linked to Islamic beliefs, which prohibit depictions of animals or human figures. As a result, geometric patterns, tulips, roses, and other floral motifs are commonly featured. Water marbling is widely used in various decorative applications, including illustrations on the covers of the “Qur’an,” everyday objects, and architectural ornamentation.

Ahmet Coktan has been dedicated to the art of water marbling for over 20 years and has visited 19 countries. He explains that the ox gall in the pigments allows the colors to spread naturally in the water, forming beautiful rippling patterns before he begins the detailed design process. In 2009, he created a monumental water marbling piece in Qatar, measuring 11 meters in length and 1.5 meters in width, setting a new Guinness World Record.
