Birthday Keeping Party of All Circles of Overseas Chinese and Ethnic Chinese from Vietnam presented, in November 5, 1971, this gift to Chiang Kai-shek for his 85th birthday. It is a gold leaf embossed with the image of the God of Longevity set on red flannelette overlaid on the base surrounded by a white wooden frame mounted in a three-dimensional outer wooden frame with a glass cover. The God of Longevity holds a rod hanging a gourd, with bats, deer, and three Chinese characters "prosperity, good fortune, and longevity" embellished around him. The right side of the glass is inscribed with the words "In celebration of President Chiang Kai-shek's 85th birthday," and the left side, "Respectfully, Birthday Keeping Party of All Circles of Overseas Chinese and Ethnic Chinese from Vietnam," and the name of the maker "Product of Huamei Jeweler."
Vietnam is one of the areas that overseas Chinese inhabit. Chinese account for over a tenth of Vietnam's population, and mostly, more than 500,000, live in Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon City). They have close relationships with the Republic of China all along. In 1971, during later period of the Vietnam War (1961-1975), the US military announced its withdrawal from Vietnam, ground fighting was close to the end, and overseas Chinese in Vietnam gained some breathing space. On October 30, the same year, President Yen Chiakan as a special envoy went to Saigon to celebrate the inauguration of Vietnamese President Nguyen Van Thieu.
By contrast, the Republic of China, in October 1971, was at a low ebb due to withdrawal from the United Nations. At interview with Chiang's attendants, they mentioned "On October 26, 1971, at Ta Daxi Guesthouse in Daxi, the United States informed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and our military attaché reported the message to President Chiang. I was there next to him. President Chiang has a pavilion there in Daxi Guesthouse. He sat there, facing Dahan Creek. The military attaché told him 'the CCP has entered the united Nations.' The old man threw his hat on the ground, was angered, and his tears started streaming down."
