Huang Chin-ling (1940- )–pseudonyms Chu-shih, Yao-guang, Lochin Sanren, Yi-teng, etc.–was born in Lugang Township, Changhua County. He started studying at Taichung Municipal Taichung Industrial High School in 1955, and he learned calligraphy under Tsao Jung. In 1967, he graduated from National Taiwan University of Arts. In 1972, he won the Merit Award in the Taipei Calligraphy Exhibition, and in October, he won second place for calligraphy in the Chiang Kai-shek Birthday Anniversary Exhibition. In 1974, he established the Huano Calligraphy Society with others, and in the same year, he visited Korea for the Korea-China Cultural Exchange Exhibition. In 1975, he was awarded second place in the 29th Taiwan Provincial Art Exhibition. In 1977, he founded the Hsiaoshanlou Calligraphy School, and in 1986, he served as a review member of the Danlu Calligraphy Society.
Huang Chin-ling learned calligraphy from Tsao Jung. His style is vigorous, and he is proficient in four scripts. Chang Guang-bin praised him, saying his “regular script is flooded with the style of Jin and Tang Dynasties; his semi-cursive script is based on the Danlu style, but also combining Huaisu and Erhwang’s charm. The seal script and the ancient body have their origins, and they are both vigorous and self-reliant." He also states that Huang’s “pen is bright and strong, light and swift like a horse crossing the sky. When steady, it is like a cone on a sand wall, sturdy and holding. His penmanship is vigorous and graceful, clean and decisive, but grandiose.”
This work was donated by Huang Chin-ling to be exhibited in the Danlu Calligraphy Society Exhibition. The Danlu Calligraphy Society was established by Mr. Tsao Jung (Chiu-pu) in 1929. Mr. Tsao has a pseudonym Danlu, holds a broad understanding of historical classics, and has studied various inscriptions of previous dynasties. He established the “Shu, Dao, Zen” method with his outstanding calligraphy skills. This work spells out a seven-character quatrain written by Huang–“Banyan leaves fly everywhere at Fagushan, thin rain spells out endless opportunities. Mountains and waters pleasantly blend into the ink scenery, and the spring breeze gently caresses the green mountaintop.” Written in semi-cursive script, the form is elongated, with thick brushstrokes and heavy lifting. Yet while the turning points are rounded, the pen is stiff and upright, hinting at slight Jinshih qualities.
