Lien Sheng-Yen (1938-) was born in Sanchong City, Taipei County (now Sanchong District, New Taipei City). He is also known by his courtesy name Muhao and pseudonym Jie Ge. Lien graduated from the Department of Chemical Engineering at Chung Yuan Christian University and completed his studies at the Graduate Institute of Education at National Taiwan Normal University. He has held various positions, including Chairman of Qingchuan High School of Commerce, President of the Huan E Calligraphy Association, Chairman of the Chinese Calligraphy Society, Principal of Qingchuan High School of Commerce, and National Assembly Representative. Lien began studying calligraphy under Tsao Chiu-Pu in 1967, establishing a foundation in regular and running scripts before exploring clerical, cursive, and seal scripts. His works have been widely recognized and have earned him the Outstanding Award in Calligraphy at the first World Calligraphy and Painting Art Competition and the Excellence Award in Calligraphy at the 10th Global Chinese Cultural and Artistic Heritage Awards. He has frequently served as a judge for national and provincial art exhibitions, including the National Art Exhibition, Provincial Art Exhibition, and Dadun Art Exhibition.
Lien adheres to his teacher's guidance, thoroughly studying various calligraphic styles from historical stele inscriptions and refining his techniques across different scripts. He has received numerous accolades, including the Outstanding Award in Calligraphy at the first World Calligraphy and Painting Art Competition and the Excellence Award in Calligraphy at the 10th Global Chinese Cultural and Artistic Heritage Awards. In recent years, Lien has also composed poetry, demonstrating his profound knowledge of classical Chinese literature. Former Presidential Advisor Ni Tuan-Jiu once praised his calligraphy: "His running, cursive, and clerical scripts are grand and majestic, with vigorous and spirited strokes. He has grasped the essence of the ancient masters' techniques and devoted himself diligently in seclusion, earning his place among contemporary calligraphy masters without shame."
Lien meticulously studies and emulates the works of renowned calligraphers from various dynasties, achieving mastery in brushwork through extensive learning and aiming to create innovative expressions based on traditional calligraphy. This particular work is written in running-cursive script, featuring Li Bai's seven-character quatrain "Inscription on Bei Xie’s Stele":
"Exiled to Changsha as a guest; Westward, I gaze toward Chang’an, not seeing home. A jade flute plays in the Yellow Crane Tower;
While in May, plum blossoms fall in the river city." The work showcases his strong and free brushwork, with robust lines that seek simplicity while incorporating variation. The structure of the characters is generally spacious and open, and the composition slightly overflows, creating a powerful visual impact.
