Shih Chun-mao (1941–) was born in the city of Kaohsiung, Taiwan. His courtesy name is Ta-kang, and his sobriquet is Tzu-hsin. He has practiced calligraphy from childhood, writing without cease over the many years, his technical foundation solid and his attainments profound. He has promoted the art of calligraphy and guided younger practitioners through decades of diligent creative practice. After more than forty years of study, he commands all major scripts, and his creative style has kept pace with the times—each script's distinctive manner is fluently transformed into a fresh new appearance, full of spirited vitality. He studied under Chen Tzu-ho, Wang Pei-yueh, Wang Chuang-wei, and Wu Hsueh-fan, and his early works received major prizes at national and provincial exhibitions on numerous occasions.

Shih has served as a juror for the All-University Youth Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition, National Youth Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition, and myriad fine arts exhibitions at Taiwan’s provincial and municipal levels; as a member of the textbook review committee for calligraphy education at the National Institute for Compilation and Translation; and as chairman of the Chinese Calligraphy Education Association. He has been honored as the fourteenth Outstanding Alumnus of National Tainan Teachers College and the fifth Outstanding Alumnus of National Taipei Teachers College. His published works include Shih Chun-mao's Transcription of the Jiucheng Palace Sweet Spring Stele Inscription, Vols. 1–4 of Reading and Writing Poetry, Shih Chun-mao's Selected Spring Festival Couplets, and Collected Works of Shih Chun-mao's Calligraphy. He employs the timeless spirit of ancient writing as a guiding principle for moral education, nurturing the inner development of countless students. He currently serves as a calligraphy instructor at the Presidential Office and at the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall Management Office.

Shih wrote this work in seal and clerical script. The composition is balanced and orderly, the character forms bold and spirited, the lines strong and forceful, the overall momentum majestic. The rhythmic energy and expressive pleasure of his brushwork are full of lively vitality; his brushstrokes are assured, lending the characters an infinite dignity without sacrificing vibrancy. Every stroke is vigorous and powerful, stable and upright, with a structure that is even and unified, accomplished in a single sustained breath. The three-character colophon flows in graceful semi-cursive script, and the work as a whole testifies to the artist's painstaking effort—a truly rare and exceptional piece.
