Description:This appears to be a draft of a speech presenting Zhang Xiuya’s views on writing. Zhang believes that writing should emphasize three things: assimilating broad knowledge, capturing life experience, and training in the skill of writing. As for “assimilating broad knowledge,” Zhang says that literary knowledge alone is not sufficient. Natural science, art, philosophy, and history should also be brought in and absorbed. In terms of “capturing life experience,” he believed that life is a huge school and that without a rich life experience, an author’s writing would be superficial and dislocated. As for “training in the skill of writing,” the first step was to go ahead and write, for the more you wrote, the more you would perfect your skill. In addition to an emphasis on graceful form, there must be a solid substance, for this was the only way a piece of writing could last.

其他說明:本文似為演講稿，提出其對寫作的看法。認為寫作應重視三個要件：廣泛知識的吸收、人生經驗的擷取及寫作技巧的鍛鍊。在廣泛知識的吸收」中提到只有文學方面的知識是不夠的，自然科學、藝術、哲學、史地等方面的知識也都應汲取吸收。而「人生經驗的擷取」中認為人生就是一所廣大的學校，沒有豐厚的人生經驗，作品將淪於膚淺、游離；至於「寫作技巧的鍛鍊」，第一步就是要去寫，寫得愈多，技巧自然也愈純熟。除了文采形式的重視，也要有堅實的內容，如此才能使作品具有永恆性。
