Description:This poem consists of four stanzas or 16 lines. In it, Chao Tien-yi reflects on the death of his childhood playmate Dustin Chuang during the Second Taiwan Strait Crisis, alternatively known as the 823 Artillery Battle. On August 23, 1958, the People's Liberation Army shelled the island of Quemoy (now known as Kinmen County, an island under the Nationalist government’s control but located just off the coast of mainland China); this was followed by a series of attacks that didn’t conclude until January 1, 1979. The poem tells the story of a soldier who died during the battle. Before the bombing, he was set to be discharged with honor in a month’s time, but instead, he sacrificed himself on the battlefield. The poem also describes the intense grief felt by his parents as news of the soldier reached them. The author concludes the poem by questioning the meaning of sacrificing one’s life in war.

摘要:本筆資料共分為四節，16行。主題是作者悼念在八二三炮戰中壯烈犧牲的童年伙伴莊德鑫。八二三砲戰是指1958年8月23日中華人民共和國解放軍首先對中華民國領土金門的大膽等島進行密集砲擊，直至1979年1月1日由中華人民共和國正式宣布停止砲擊，海峽兩岸的軍事衝突因而告終。本詩作談及一位因砲戰陣亡的軍人，亦為作者的童年伙伴，他本預計再一個多月便能退伍返鄉，卻不幸成為砲戰下的犧牲者。詩中描寫了他的父母接到軍中通知的殉難消息後之悲愴情景，詩末以作者感悟死亡於戰爭中的意義作結。（文／許容展）
