Description:The poem entitled “The Empty Glass” suggest the Buddhist philosophy that “Emptiness is form, and form is emptiness.” It tells of a special wine glass, but after he drank from it, Zhou “saw a green shadow swishing around in the glass. I tilted it on its side and not a drop had been lost,” whereupon he suddenly realized that it was “completely empty.”

The instant I raised my head and drank
My body was light as that of a butterfly, and cool.
And it was as if the fragrance of flowers was coming
from Vimalakīrti’s legendary room.

The entire poem is filled with Zen meaning; the “Preface” explains the circumstances and reasons for drinking the wine.

摘要:本詩為周夢蝶追記1974年農曆元旦與友徐進夫拜謁南懷謹，午飯中懷謹大師命舉酒命飲，而他一飲而盡的事。酒至空杯，一滴不剩。詩人夢蝶也感悟那舉酒而飲的片刻，身體的感覺似照見我執與欲望的昇起與化解。醉與醒之間，似我非我，似悟非悟。詩末：詩人自問，「這如此瘦如此脆薄的我的喉嚨/能吞吐得了這十方虛空不？」詩前有序說明此詩寫作的因緣。(文/廖淑芳)

其他說明:詩題「空杯」寓涵「空即是色、色即是空」之佛理，內容敘寫以某特殊酒器盛酒，酒飲盡後，但見「杯中綠影搖漾，傾側皆滿，竟未損一滴」，而恍然「十方虛空」之悟：「在舉頭一仰而盡的一剎那／身輕似蝶　泠泠然／若自維摩丈室的花香裡散出⋯⋯」，全詩充滿禪意；「序」則說明當次飲酒之情境與原由。
