Description:Shi Meiqiao was dedicated to the study of He Shaoji’s running cursive script, as can be seen in this work of calligraphy inscribed by Shi at the age of 72. It is highly similar in stroke style to another work by Shi in the museum collection, “Inscription of an old work in running cursive script,” which was gifted to Chan Tso-chou when Shi was 79 years old. The only noticeable difference is the strength of the strokes as Shi aged. Such is the distinctive quality of the calligraphy of the nation’s literati—nothing is intentional, yet everything is stunningly beautiful. These “literati calligraphers” infused their literary and aesthetic knowledge and skills effortlessly into the paper, demonstrating what art critics mean by “Artists rarely intend their best work to be their best work.” Both works by Shi showcase his unique style and epitomize literati calligraphy.

其他說明:風格特色:施梅樵(1870-1949),為清末到日治時期重要的台灣詩人,也是這個時期的代表書家。其書法學自清代碑派名家何紹基(1799-1873)。何紹基習書由唐代顏真卿和歐陽通入手,中年潛心臨摹魏碑《張黑女墓誌》,晚年他專攻篆籀與漢碑,融書體之長,而自成一家。施梅樵專攻何紹基學自真卿《爭座位帖》的行草書體,此書作於72歲,可與館藏79歲時所作「行草書錄舊作贈詹作舟」相對照。二者的章法布局十分相似,惟有筆力所展現的「人書俱老」的不同,此正是文人書法的最大特色──即不刻意設計畫面,不追求所謂的「視覺效果」,書家藉由學問與修養的日新又新,自然展現於書法之中,無意於佳乃佳耳。72歲與79歲二件書作俱佳,皆是施梅樵自我風格的呈現,這二件作品實是「文人書法」的最佳註解。(文/莊千慧)
