Description:In his serialized essay Xu Chengzhang discusses poetic form, content and its literary value. The entire series was in eight parts published in the Kunnan Poetry Garden, Vols. 1~8. In discussing poetry, Xu touches upon the idea that in the pursuit of beauty, for the topic or the language itself, we may lose the spirit of poetry, and that such poetry loses it “personality.” Xu, a longtime student of the phonology of vernacular Taiwanese and classical poetry, participated in many poetry societies and “riddle clubs” during the Japanese Occupation Period. Because he could write poetry, many people urged him to teach privately, and so he first was a tutor for the Kang family of Luzhu, Gaohsiung County. Later he was a private tutor for the Wu family of Madou, Tainan County, where he taught until the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War in 1937.

摘要:散文，300字左右。詩是甚麼？擊缽吟是不是詩？有人認為擊缽吟只重詩的形式而不重內容，多模仿而少創作，有了詩的技巧而無詩的精神，是逢場作戲而非有感而發，喪失了詩的真正含意。(文/黃貝玉)

其他說明:許成章談論有關詩的格式、內容及所具有的文學價值等，此部份全部應為八部，發表在《鯤南詩苑》一至八卷中。許成章在論詩的過程中，提到倘若為了題目、為了在文字上追求美的技術等，就會失去詩的精神，這樣的詩，也就失去「品格」。長期研究台語音字及古典詩的許成章，日治時期即參與了許多的詩社與謎會，因為會做詩的關係，許多人勸他去教私塾，因此他首先到高雄縣路竹的康家當塾師，後來轉到台南縣麻豆的吳家坐館，直到1937年中日戰爭爆發後才停止。
